Sketchbook: Starlight

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission is orbiting the asteroid Bennu. In a few years, it will bring a sample from the asteroid’s surface back home to Earth. The sample return capsule will land just a few miles from where I took this photo in Utah.

Starlight II
by Jennifer Adams

“Well contented with the spacious starlight,
The cool wind’s touch and the deep blue distance,
Till the dawn came in with golden sandals.” —Sappho

Lovers talk of starlight.
Robert to Elizabeth,
Sappho,
and Shakespeare
in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Making night magic
under the skyfire
from a trillion
miles away.

When the deep blue distance
binds us apart,
I become the empty space
of a lost star.
Now gone cold,
which once pulsed
and burned.

In the spacious starlight,
I yearn for the dawn.
I wait in the frozen light
from a distant world,
illuminating the road
that leads to you.
