My car broke down this morning—right in the middle of a construction zone, on the interstate, during rush hour. I do not recommend it. The tow truck driver was the nicest guy you could hope to meet, and he was interesting for two reasons: he looked exactly like Santa Claus, and he’s grateful for the space program.
When I told him I work for a software company, he remembered buying a digital watch in the 70s for three hundred dollars, noting that a smart phone now packs more computing kick than a roomful of core memory computers from that era.
“And you know what drove that?” he said. “The space program. That’s where the push came for modern computers. And a lot of medical stuff, too. Now, I’m not a geek or anything, but most people don’t realize that.”
This geek just grinned and nodded his head.
“You know what?” I said. “You got that right.”
