Fountain of Life?

This view of the Iani Chaos region comes from the Mars Express orbiter. Mars explorers think the jumbled terrain of these chaotic landscapes resulted from water bursting out to the surface from underground, possibly more than once. Such locations are prime candidates to search for signs of past microbial life. Learn more.

I don’t know about the dark areas specifically, though there definitely is iron found in interesting forms here. You might be interested in some good detail found here.
